Timed math drills

Timed fact drills for all four operations: mad minutes with 30 facts in one minute, and 100-problem fact grids. Each sheet has a score box, a time on the header and an answer key, so students can track their own speed.

How to teach it

  1. Give the drill only once the facts have been taught: speed comes after understanding.
  2. Set a timer for the time on the sheet. Students answer what they can and skip what they cannot.
  3. Mark it with the key and write the score in the box.
  4. Repeat the same level a few times a week and compare scores against the student's own, not the class.

Questions teachers ask

What is a mad minute?
A one-minute timed sheet of basic facts. Students answer as many as they can in a minute, and track the score over time.
What is a 100-problem fact grid?
A 10 by 10 table with numbers along the top and side. Each cell is the top number and the side number combined with the operation in the corner, so one grid practises 100 facts.
Are timed tests bad for students?
Timed practice helps when the facts are already understood and the score is compared only with the student's own earlier score. Keep it short and low-stakes, and never use it as the first teaching of a fact.
What fact fluency is expected by grade?
In the Common Core: addition and subtraction within 10 by the end of Grade 1, within 20 from memory by the end of Grade 2 (2.OA.B.2), and multiplication facts by the end of Grade 3 (3.OA.C.7). Alberta sets addition facts to 20 in Grade 1 and multiplication to 12 × 12 in Grade 4.
