Questions teachers ask

Is it BEDMAS or PEMDAS?
Both name the same rule. Canadian classrooms say BEDMAS: brackets, exponents, division and multiplication, addition and subtraction. US classrooms say PEMDAS: parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction. Multiplying and dividing are done together from left to right, and so are adding and subtracting.
What grade learns the order of operations?
Brackets come in around Grade 5, exponents in Grade 6, and integers in Grade 7. In Alberta, Grade 6 evaluates expressions with brackets and powers, and Grade 7 uses positive decimals.
