On this sheet
- There are 6 packs. Each pack has 11 pencils. How many pencils are there in all? — answer: 66
- Ben has 8 teams with 12 players in each team. How many players does Ben have? — answer: 96
- There are 5 shelves. Each shelf has 6 books. How many books are there in all? — answer: 30
How to teach it
- Start with the tables that have patterns: 2, 5 and 10.
- Use a known fact to find a new one: 6 × 7 is 5 × 7 plus one more 7.
- Turn it around: 3 × 8 is the same as 8 × 3, so every fact learned is two.
- Practise one table until it is quick, then mix it with the ones already known.
Questions teachers ask
- How many problems are on this worksheet?
- 8 on one page, with the answer key on the last page.
- What grade and standard is it for?
- Grade 3. Common Core: 3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.3. Alberta: Number 3.
- Can I print more than one version?
- Yes. Every version has different numbers and its own answer key. Use “Make another version” for a new one; the same version always prints the same.
- What grade learns the times tables?
- In the Common Core, students know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of Grade 3 (3.OA.C.7). Alberta's curriculum sets the facts to 12 × 12 in Grade 4.
- In what order should the times tables be learned?
- A common order is 2, 10, 5, then 3, 4 and 6, then 9, 8, 7, and last 11 and 12. Each new table uses facts from the tables before it.
