How to teach it

  1. Start with the tables that have patterns: 2, 5 and 10.
  2. Use a known fact to find a new one: 6 × 7 is 5 × 7 plus one more 7.
  3. Turn it around: 3 × 8 is the same as 8 × 3, so every fact learned is two.
  4. Practise one table until it is quick, then mix it with the ones already known.

Questions teachers ask

What grade learns the times tables?
In the Common Core, students know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of Grade 3 (3.OA.C.7). Alberta's curriculum sets the facts to 12 × 12 in Grade 4.
In what order should the times tables be learned?
A common order is 2, 10, 5, then 3, 4 and 6, then 9, 8, 7, and last 11 and 12. Each new table uses facts from the tables before it.
Are these good for timed practice?
For speed, use the timed drills: mad minutes and 100-problem fact grids with a score box.
