How to teach it

  1. Multiply the top number by the ones digit of the bottom number.
  2. Multiply the top number by the tens digit. Write a zero in the ones place first, because you are multiplying by tens.
  3. Add the partial products.
  4. Estimate first: 38 × 21 is about 40 × 20 = 800, so an answer of 7,980 needs another look.

Questions teachers ask

What grade learns multi-digit multiplication?
In the Common Core, multiplying up to 4 digits by 1 digit, and 2 digits by 2 digits, is Grade 4 (4.NBT.B.5). Fluency with the standard method is Grade 5 (5.NBT.B.5).
What is the area model for multiplication?
