How to teach it

  1. Divide: how many times does the divisor go into the first part of the number?
  2. Multiply: write the quotient digit above, and multiply it by the divisor.
  3. Subtract: take the product away to find what is left.
  4. Bring down: bring down the next digit and divide again.
  5. Check: multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder. You should get the number you started with.

Questions teachers ask

What grade is long division taught in?
Dividing up to 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit divisor is Grade 4 in the Common Core (4.NBT.B.6). Dividing by a 2-digit divisor is Grade 5 (5.NBT.B.6), and the standard method is expected to be fluent by Grade 6 (6.NS.B.2).
What are the steps of long division?
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and repeat until there are no digits left. What is left at the end is the remainder.
Should students start with or without remainders?
Start without remainders so the steps come first, then move to the same level with remainders. Each level on this page has both.
Are the answer keys worked out?
Yes. The last page of every sheet shows each problem with the quotient, every multiply and subtract step, and the remainder.
