On this sheet
- 8 3/4 + 3 4/7 = ? — answer: 12 9/28
- 8 1/6 − 3 7/10 = ? — answer: 4 7/15
- 7 4/5 + 7 1/2 = ? — answer: 15 3/10
How to teach it
- Equivalent fractions: multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number.
- Comparing: with the same denominator, compare numerators; otherwise rewrite both over a common denominator.
- Adding and subtracting: the denominators must match first. Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.
- Mixed numbers: add the wholes and the fractions, then regroup if the fraction part is one or more.
Questions teachers ask
- How many problems are on this worksheet?
- 24 on one page, with the answer key on the last page.
- What grade and standard is it for?
- Grade 5. Common Core: 5.NF.A.1.
- Can I print more than one version?
- Yes. Every version has different numbers and its own answer key. Use “Make another version” for a new one; the same version always prints the same.
- When do students learn fractions?
- In the Common Core, fractions as numbers and on a number line start in Grade 3 (3.NF), adding and subtracting like denominators is Grade 4 (4.NF.B.3), and unlike denominators is Grade 5 (5.NF.A.1).
- Do the answers have to be in lowest terms?
- Each question says when it does. The answer key gives answers in lowest terms, and mixed numbers where the question asks for them.
