How to teach it

  1. Equivalent fractions: multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number.
  2. Comparing: with the same denominator, compare numerators; otherwise rewrite both over a common denominator.
  3. Adding and subtracting: the denominators must match first. Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.
  4. Mixed numbers: add the wholes and the fractions, then regroup if the fraction part is one or more.

Questions teachers ask

When do students learn fractions?
In the Common Core, fractions as numbers and on a number line start in Grade 3 (3.NF), adding and subtracting like denominators is Grade 4 (4.NF.B.3), and unlike denominators is Grade 5 (5.NF.A.1).
Do the answers have to be in lowest terms?
Each question says when it does. The answer key gives answers in lowest terms, and mixed numbers where the question asks for them.
